The first dip of the year in the Region of Murcia

Featured Image

For some, the year doesn’t truly begin until they take their first dip in the sea. And in the Region of Murcia, where temperatures are milder than in other parts of the Mediterranean, that tradition often comes much earlier than usual.

In the Region, there are brave souls who don’t wait until June to enjoy their first swim. In fact, some take the plunge on January 1st, still feeling the effects of New Year's Eve, as happens in towns like Cartagena or La Manga, where more and more people bid farewell to the holiday season with a cold-water dip. But for most, the real starting signal for the swimming season comes with the Holy Week (Semana Santa) and the first sunny days of April.

Perfect beaches for a first swim

When it comes to ideal spots for this first contact with the sea, the Mar Menor is a classic. Its calm, warm waters allow for a smooth transition into summer. But if you prefer a more adventurous swim, you can try:

  • Calblanque: Untouched nature and crystal-clear water, though a bit colder.

  • Bolnuevo (Mazarrón): Golden sand and moderate waves for the more daring.

  • La Azohía (Cartagena): A peaceful area with crystal-clear waters. The water is so clear that if you don’t see a fish, you must be doing something wrong!

More than just a dip

But the first dip of the year doesn’t have to be just a leap into the water. Many water activities also kick off their season around this time.

  • Paddleboarding and kayaking: Not ready to swim yet? No problem. Start with paddleboarding or kayaking and ease your way into the water without having to go all in—unless you fall, of course.

So, if you’re one of those eagerly awaiting the first swim of the year, the Region of Murcia makes it easy for you. With beaches to suit all tastes, all you need is a little courage and the urge to kick off the sun and sea season. And if the water is still too cold, you can always settle into a seaside terrace and toast to the summer that’s just around the corner.

Enjoy your dip!
