The Region of Murcia, known for its sunny climate, enviable year-round temperatures, and diverse landscapes, also offers numerous destinations perfect for visiting with children. Taking advantage of the Jubilee Year in Caravaca de la Cruz, a family pilgrimage along the Levante Way is the ideal plan. The number of dreamlike places and activities for the whole family is simply amazing!
The Levante Way is divided into five stages, which we will break down one by one to make everything easier. Additionally, to make it more appealing and challenging for them, children receive a pilgrim's diploma for sections under 50 km.
Here we present a selection of places that will make your journey with the little ones an unforgettable family experience, from the first to the last stage:
Stage 1: Orihuela to Murcia
The first stage is from Orihuela to Murcia, covering 24 kilometers along the Segura River. It is an excellent opportunity for children to learn about the history and nature of the Region. The route begins near the Cathedral of the Savior in Orihuela and follows the riverbank, offering stunning views and opportunities to discover churches, sanctuaries, and museums. We suggest visiting the Archaeological Museum and Miguel Hernández's House, an educational stop to immerse in local history and culture. The Tajo-Segura Transfer cannot be missed, where we can teach the kids about the importance of water in the Region.
Stage 2: Murcia to Alguazas
The second stage connects Murcia with Alguazas through a walk in the Murcia orchard. This 26-kilometer stretch runs through the Murcia orchard and is ideal for reflecting and connecting with nature. It starts from Murcia and heads towards Alguazas, passing through emblematic places like the Malecón and the museum dedicated to orchard traditions.
Must-see visits in this stage include the Museum of the Orchard and la Ñora, perfect for teaching children about agricultural traditions and discovering irrigation canals and orchard work. Exploring the Northwest Greenway, a safe and educational walk along old railway tracks turned into trails, is a must. As a climax to this stage, a visit to Niño de Mula, a common pilgrimage and visit spot that you cannot miss along the Northwest Greenway.
Stage 3: Alguazas to Mula
In stage 3, we discover Alguazas and Mula. Here, the children will enjoy exploring castles, dryland landscapes, and badlands with impressive views and opportunities to learn about local geology and history. From Alguazas, the path passes through Los Rodeos and follows the Mula River course until reaching Mula. We recommend visiting the badlands, a geology lesson on erosion and the Region's arid landscapes. The visits to the Church of Our Lady of Remedies and the Roman remains at Los Villaricos are also unmissable, offering an opportunity to learn about Roman history in situ.
Stage 4: Mula to Bullas
In stage 4, almost visualizing the finish line, we delve into vineyards and mountainous landscapes between Mula and Bullas. This 21-kilometer stretch is an excellent opportunity to learn about viticulture and local wildlife, especially in the Sierra Espuña Regional Park. And if we are in Bullas, we must visit the Wine Museum to learn extensively about wine production and its importance in the Region.
Stage 5: Bullas to Caravaca de la Cruz
Finally, we reach stage 5. From Bullas, through natural landscapes, we arrive at Caravaca. The Sanctuary of the Vera Cruz awaits us! The final stretch of the Levante Way is the most mountainous, with a 500-meter climb. Undoubtedly, an epic final sprint before reaching the finish line. Exploring the old town of Cehegín is a must, as well as discovering the historical architecture and the ruins of Begastri.
And just 2 kilometers from Caravaca de la Cruz, we must visit Las Fuentes del Marqués. A well-deserved picnic, some playtime in nature for the kids, or simply admiring the supernatural beauty of this paradise are more than enough reasons to go. And let us tell you, anyone who visits this idyllic spot returns!
Finally, we arrive at the Sanctuary of the Vera Cruz, where the great lesson awaits us: the importance of Faith and the history of the Sanctuary.
The Levante Way, throughout each of its stages, is an enriching experience for both adults and children. Once completed, you will reach the same conclusion as we did—it is simply Extraordinary.
