The history castle of Caravaca de la Cruz

Situated at an altitude of approximately 675 meters, the Castle of Caravaca de la Cruz is one of the most iconic monumental sites in the Region of Murcia. This historic walled complex, with its Islamic origins, has witnessed numerous transformations over the centuries, becoming a cultural, religious, and touristic landmark.

Although its initial construction dates back to the Muslim era, after the mudéjar revolt of 1264–1266, the castle was granted by King Alfonso X to the Knights Templar. It became the only commandery of this order in the Kingdom of Murcia, with its jurisdiction extending to nearby towns such as Cehegín. Later, following the dissolution of the Templars in the 14th century, the castle was entrusted to the Order of Santiago, which preserved and repurposed it.

The present-day castle houses the Sanctuary of the Santísima y Vera Cruz, built in the 17th century. This temple, located at the heart of the complex, features a Latin-cross floor plan and an impressive Baroque façade from the 18th century, crafted from marble quarried in the Region of Murcia. The blend of Renaissance and Baroque styles gives it a unique character, making it a truly distinctive landmark.

The castle’s walls, reinforced with fifteen towers of various shapes and sizes, still preserve original elements of the medieval fortress. One of the most intriguing features is the protruding spur, known as the “canapé,” added during the War of Independence against the French, replacing two of the original towers.

Throughout history, the castle served military purposes, particularly during the War of Succession and the War of Independence. However, the construction of the sanctuary in the 17th century ensured the preservation of much of the structure. In 1944, the entire complex was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument, highlighting its historical and architectural significance.

The Basilica and the Museum of the Vera Cruz

Within the castle, you’ll find the Basilica-Sanctuary of the Santísima y Vera Cruz, a pilgrimage site for thousands of faithful visitors. The temple safeguards the Vera Cruz of Caravaca, a relic of profound devotional and cultural value. Inside, visitors can also explore the Museum of the Vera Cruz, which offers a comprehensive insight into the history and significance of this sacred site.

The basilica’s design features a triforium that runs along the side naves and splayed arches that connect to the transept, creating a visual effect that enhances the grandeur of the presbytery.
